Kyle Manley

Kyle is a CIRES visiting Postdoctoral Fellow in the Balch Fire Lab, broadly focused on the social-ecological impacts of climate change. His research uses environmental data science tools—like social sensing data and remote sensing—to assess the societal impacts of major drivers of change, including wildfire, management, and climate and land use change. He is working on multiple projects, assessing the impact of wildfire and prescribed fire on recreation and looking at how global expansion of the WUI impacts fire risk. He received his PhD from the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California Irvine, developing novel approaches to map and model the impacts of global change on the supply, demand, and value of the non-material benefits we receive from nature, particularly recreation and tourism.

Originally, Kyle is from Denver, Colorado, and obtained a BA in Environmental Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder. He is passionate about integrating social systems, ecology, and climate science, with the goal of producing practical research that can inform climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
