Pavan Appanna

Pavan is a graduate student in Computer Science at the University of Colorado Boulder and a Graduate Research Assistant at Earth Lab working under Dr. Nayani Ilangakoon. His interests span cloud computing and machine learning, and he is passionate about applying these skills to solve impactful problems in the environmental science domain. He loves data.

Before grad school, he worked at a fintech startup designing distributed systems for large-scale, data-intensive processing and interned at Samsung’s on-device AI team, where he optimized computer vision models and built multithreaded ETL pipelines to accelerate inference workflows on mobile devices. As an undergrad, he also worked on projects related to vegetation cover analysis and water depletion modeling in India.

At Earth Lab, he is currently involved in projects in the broad area of remote sensing. Outside of work, Pavan enjoys hiking, playing basketball, and practicing yoga.
